The Life Performance Approach
Life Performance is our proprietary method of functional fitness training to get you to move and feel and live like the athlete you are! Life Performance isn't focused on changing the way you look in the mirror or reaching a certain number on a scale. It is far more powerful than that.
The Life Performance Approach has Three Primary Goals.
1. Eliminate Pain & Reduce the Risk of Injury
2. Build a Foundation for Proper Movement First and Then Improve Functional Strength, Power & Elasticity
3. Make a Lifelong Commitment to Optimal Health & Fitness
Our Approach is based on the belief that when you reduce or eliminate pain, and begin to move effectively and efficiently, and make healthy lifestyle choices, the superficial goals of looking better and losing weight will take care of themselves. And the end result will be that you'll naturally feel better and succeed in making a lifelong commitment to optimal health and fitness!
Our methodology is based on fundamental movement patterns and movement based training. We believe that the foundation for proper movement begins with core strength, appropriate stability in the lumbar spine, scapular-thoracic joints and knees, along with adequate mobility in the ankles, hips and shoulders. When we have optimal mobility and stability and a foundation that is strong and stable, we are able to move effectively and efficiently in life and in sport.
Our workouts typically begin with soft tissue work followed by mobility and stability exercises designed to create stability where we need stability and mobility where we need mobility. Next we incorporate what we term our dynamic mobility series that activates key muscle groups, integrates proper movement patterns, and warms and prepares the body for the workout ahead. Strength Training, Power, Elasticity, Balance, Functional Flexibility, and Cardiovascular Interval Training are then added to complete the workout. Beginners start from a supported position and gradually progress to dynamic movement patterns where every exercise becomes a total body exercise. Competitive athletes progress to even more dynamic exercises that increase power, strength and elasticity to maximize benefit for their sport and reduce the risk of injury.
When you walk into Physical Focus, you'll notice that we do not have all the standard weight machines typically found in bigger gyms. We have free weights, rubber bands, balls, adjustable cables and lots of open floor space instead. That's because we train movement patterns. And once those patterns are biomechanically sound, then we develop whole body strength, power and elasticity. We do not build strength on top of poor mechanics because that only reinforces bad patterns and ultimately leads to bigger problems and injury. To build strength, we add resistance to our exercises by using gravity and body weight first, and then utilize free weights, rubber tubing, kettlebells, medicine balls and adjustable cables versus isolating muscle groups by following a circuit of linear weight machines.
The Life Performance Approach believes that optimal health includes far more than lifting weights or running on a treadmill. Our Approach looks at the bigger picture of physical health and addresses all the essential components in each individual program - Cardiovascular Endurance, Muscular Strength, Posture, Breath, Flexibility, Range of Motion, Core Stability, Nutrition, Balance, Elasticity & Power! Because at Physical Focus, our goal is to get you to move and feel and live like the athlete you are, no matter what your age and abilities!
