Nutrition Tips October 2012

Our nutrition consultant Margo Ochoa has three nutrition tips for you.

Tip #1:

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for balancing hormones, losing weight, boosting the immune system and protecting your body from disease and infection. Most people are deficient. Since vitamin D is actually a hormone that influences nearly 3,000 of your 25,000 genes, it is extremely important to make sure you have optimal levels. You can go to www.vitamindcouncil.org for more information and you can purchase an inexpensive in-home vitamin D test kit. Optimum levels are 70 - 100.

Tip #2:

8 out of 10 Americans get less than the recommended intake of magnesium in their diets. According to the National Institutes of Health, magnesium is necessary for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. Magnesium helps keep a steady heart rhythm and retain normal blood pressure. It is critical for helping maintain normal muscle and nerve function, supporting a healthy immune system, keeping bones strong and reducing symptoms of PMS. Research suggests that some children with ADHD have lowered levels of magnesium. People with diabetes tend to have lowered magnesium levels too. Given this information, I think it would be beneficial for most people to supplement with magnesium. It is best to take it before bed.

Tip #3:

Throw out your regular table salt and switch to Sea Salt and/or Himalayan Salt. Sea Salt and Himalayan salt contain over 80 essential minerals. Table salt (refined salt) has no minerals. Adding the right kind of salt to your diet can help adrenal disorders, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, fatigue, headaches, immune system function and thyroid disorders.

Food can be medicine or a death sentence. The choices we make now will affect our wellbeing for many years to come.
